- Melanochelys: gr. μελας melas, μελανος melanos „czarny”; χελυς khelus „żółw rzeczny”.
- Chaibassia: Chaibassa, Bihar, wschodnie Indie. Gatunek typowy: Geoemyda tricarinata Blyth, 1856.
