- from Proto-Indo-European *sterh₁- (“stiff”) as Proto-Germanic *staraz (“stiff”), Latin strēnuus (“brisk”), from which root with extension *(s)treg- (“rigid, stiff”) from which Proto-Germanic *strakaz (“firm, rigid”)
- from Proto-Indo-European *sterh₃- (“stretching”)
