Etymology

From Old Japanese. Compound of 率(い) (i, 連(れん)用(よう)形(けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 率(い)る (iru, “to be accompanied with”)) + 寝(ぬ) (nu, “(archaic) to sleep”). Not to be confused with 寝(い)ぬ (inu).
