Likely related to Classical Syriac ⁧ܥܒܐ⁩ (ʾāḇā, “forest, thicket”), the root ⁧ع ب ب⁩ (ʕ-b-b) related to swellings and thickenings being the Aramaic reflex of the Arabic root ⁧ض ب ب⁩ (ḍ-b-b) related to sticking, density, tumorosity. Later duplicated to ⁧عُبْعُب⁩ (ʕubʕub).
