Wełnistek (Mallomys) – rodzaj ssaków z podrodziny myszy (Murinae) w obrębie rodziny myszowatych (Muridae).
Zasięg występowania
Rodzaj obejmuje gatunki występujące endemicznie na Nowej Gwinei.
Morfologia
Długość ciała (bez ogona) 344–470 mm, długość ogona 279–435 mm, długość ucha 25,3–36,5 mm, długość tylnej stopy 62,5–80 mm; masa ciała 925–2000 g.
Systematyka
Rodzaj zdefiniował w 1898 roku angielski zoolog Oldfield Thomas na łamach Novitates Zoologicae. Na gatunek typowy Thomas wyznaczył (oryginalne oznaczenie) wełnistka nadrzewnego (M. rothschildi).
Etymologia
- Mallomys: gr. μαλλος mallos ‘wełna’; μυς mus, μυος muos ‘mysz’.
- Dendrosminthus: gr. δενδρον dendron ‘drzewo’; σμινθος sminthos ‘mysz’. Gatunek typowy (oryginalne oznaczeni): Dendrosminthus aroaensis De Vis, 1907.
