Nazwa rodzajowa: gr. πρωτο- prōto- – pierwszy, świeży; βλεφαρον blepharon – powieka, rzęsa. Epitet gatunkowy: Richard Heinrich Rosenblatt (ur. 1930), amerykański ichtiolog.
