Plethodon – rodzaj płazów ogoniastych z podrodziny Plethodontinae w rodzinie bezpłucnikowatych (Plethodontidae). Należy do najstarszych Plethodontidae – skamieniałości płazów należących do tego rodzaju są znane już z oligoceńskich osadów w stanie Montana.
Zasięg występowania
Rodzaj obejmuje gatunki występujące w południowo-wschodniej i południowo-zachodniej Kanadzie, zachodnich i wschodnich Stanach Zjednoczonych, ale nieobecne w regionie Wielkich Równin; jedna populacja występuje w południowych Górach Skalistych w Nowym Meksyku.
Systematyka
Etymologia
- Plethodon: gr. πληθω plēthō „być pełnym”; οδους odous, οδοντος odontos „ząb”.
- Sauropsis (Saurophis): gr. σαυρος sauros „jaszczurka”; οψις opsis „wygląd”. Gatunek typowy: Salamandra erythronota Rafinesque, 1818 (= Salamandra cinerea Green, 1818).
- Hightonia: Richard Highton (ur. 1927), amerykański herpetolog. Gatunek typowy: Ambystoma vehiculum Cooper, 1869.
