Zasięg występowania

Rodzaj obejmuje gatunki występujące w Azji Południowo-Wschodniej i Australazji.

Morfologia

Długość ciała 43–84 cm, rozpiętość skrzydeł 95–175 cm; masa ciała 500–3900 g; samice są większe i cięższe od samców.

Etymologia

  • Limnaetus: epitet gatunkowy Falco limnaeetus Horsfield, 1821; gr. λιμνη limnē „bagno”; αετος aetos „orzeł”. Gatunek typowy: Falco limnaeetus Horsfield, 1821.
  • Nisaetus (Nisaetos): rodzaj Nisus Lacépède, 1799 (jastrząb); gr. αετος aetos „orzeł”.
  • Phaeoaetus: gr. φαιος phaios „ciemny, brązowy, szary”; αετος aetos „orzeł”. Gatunek typowy: Falco limnaeetus Horsfield, 1821.
  • Limnaetops: rodza Limnaetus Vigors & Horsfield, 1830; gr. ωψ ōps, ωπος ōpos „oblicze”.

Podział systematyczny

Do niedawna wszystkie gatunki z tego rodzaju zaliczane były do rodzaju Spizaetus skupiającego gatunki występujące w Azji, Afryce i Ameryce. Badania molekularne wykazały jednak, że gatunki azjatyckie są bliżej spokrewnione z orlikiem malajskim (Ictinaetus malayensis). Do rodzaju należą następujące gatunki:
