Rodzaj obejmuje gatunki występujące w Ameryce Południowej – w Wenezueli, Gujanie, Surinamie, Gujanie Francuskiej, Brazylii, Kolumbii, Ekwadorze, Peru i Boliwii.

Etymologia
Arthrosaura: gr. αρθρον arthron „staw, spojenie”; σαυρος sauros „jaszczurka”.
