Inherited from Ottoman Turkish ایچ چكمك (iç çekmek, “to sigh, to sob”),[1] equivalent to compound of iç (“inner, the inside, internal”) +‎ çekmek (“to pull, to draw, to absorb”), literally “to draw in, to pull in”.
