Etymology

From Middle High German gesmac, from Old High German gismac, gismah, from gi- + smac, from Proto-Germanic *smakkuz (“taste, flavor”). The é vowel is unexpected; perhaps changed under influence of smékhan (“to smell”). Cognate with German Geschmack: “taste, flavor” (Germany, Austria) or “smell, odor” (Switzerland).
