From Middle High German twër, from Old High German dwerah, from Proto-Germanic *þwerhaz (“cross, adverse”). Cognate to German quer (“crosswise”) (compare Querwind (“crosswind”)), Dutch dwars (“crosswise”), Swedish tvär (“across”), Gothic 𐌸𐍅𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌷𐍃 (þwairhs, “angry”).
