Etymology 1

Probably of Proto-Indo-European origin and cognate with Sanskrit -अद्- (-ad-), Avestan -𐬆𐬜- (-əδ-), Ancient Greek -αδ- (-ad-). Compare Sanskrit दृषद् (dṛṣad, “rock”), Ancient Greek δειράς (deirás, “ridge of a chain of hills”), genitive δειράδος (deirádos).

Found in արմատ (armat), հաստատ (hastat) and perhaps աղքատ (ałkʻat), անքատ (ankʻat), փինատ (pʻinat).

Etymology 2

Originally a combining form of հատ-ան-եմ (hat-an-em, “to cut”). Compare the pair փայտ-ա-հատ (pʻayt-a-hat) ~ փայտ-ատ (pʻayt-at, “woodcutter”). For the loss of հ- (h-) compare -ոտ (-ot), -եղ (-eł) and փողար (pʻołar).
