Etymology

First attested in the Eorokhae (語錄解 / 어록해), 1652, as Early Modern Korean 밧곁 (Yale: paskyeth). Equivalent to 밖 (bak, “outside”) +‎ 곁 (gyeot, “side”), but no longer perceivable as such.
