First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 드리〮다〮 (Yale: tùl-í-tá).

들 (deul-, “to enter”) + 이 (-i-, causative suffix) + 다 (-da, suffix conventionally given for citation forms).
