  一(ひと)昔(むかし)前(まえ)は、などというと老(ろう)人(じん)の繰(く)り言(ごと)になるが、年(とし)寄(よ)り、身(み)重(おも)の女(じょ)性(せい)、小(ちい)さな子(こ)供(ども)を連(つ)れた人(ひと)、けがをしている人(ひと)などが乗(の)ってくれば、誰(だれ)でも率(そっ)先(せん)して席(せき)を譲(ゆず)ったものである。
  Hitomukashi mae wa, nado to iu to rōjin no kurigoto ni naru ga, toshiyori, miomo no josei, chīsana kodomo o tsureta hito, kega o shite iru hito nado ga notte kureba, dare de mo sossen shite seki o yuzutta mono de aru.
  This will sound like another tired complaint by an old person, but in the past, if an elderly person, a pregnant woman, someone with small children, or an injured person came on the train, anyone would have gladly given that person their seat.
