Etymology

Partial calque of Dutch keiaarde (literally “cobble, cobblestone + earth”) as a compound of 珪 (kei, “silicon”) +‎ 土 (do, “earth, soil”). Coined by Japanese scientist Udagawa Yōan in 1837 in his book 舎密開宗 (Seimi Kaisō, “Introduction to Chemistry”).
