Strictly speaking, 幾個／几个 (jǐgè) should only be used with nouns that take 個／个 (gè) as a primary classifier.
幾個／几个 (jǐgè) is only used when the answer to "how many?" is expected to be under ten. For amounts that are expected to exceed ten, 多少 (duōshao) is used instead.
