Bauer (1987) suggests that the suffix 菇 is derived from an Austro–Tai word for “head” (compare Thai หัว (hǔua), Zhuang gyaeuj, Bouyei jauc, Hlai ghwous); also compare Cantonese 哥 in 膝頭哥／膝头哥 (“knee”), 鼻哥 (“nose”).
