Etymology

A medieval loanword of Iranian origin. Yu (2012) cites Persian پدرود (padrôd, “bowl?”) and Sogdian [script needed] (patrōδ) as potential sources. Also compare Khotanese phalau (“flat dish; bowl”), Hindi प्याला (pyālā, “cup”).
