Etymology

Unknown. The connection with Sanskrit अमीव (amīva, “pain, grief”) requires an unwarranted dissimilation m-ṷ > n-ṷ and should be rejected. As remarked by Nikolaev, derivation from *h₂eys- (“to search”) is semantically not very convincing; he proposed instead to connect the root *h₂eis(h₂) (“to refresh”).
