Etymology

Probably from Univerbation of ⁧ܡܘܿ⁩ (mō) +‎ ⁧ܡܸܢܕܝܼ⁩ (mindī), literally “What [is this] thing?”, compare the alternative form ⁧ܡܵܕܝܼ⁩ (mādī) formed with ⁧ܡܵܐ⁩ (mā) rather than ⁧ܡܘܿ⁩ (mō). Also often used in some dialects is ⁧ܡܸܢܕܝܼ⁩ ⁧ܡܵܐ⁩ (mā mindī, literally “What thing?”). Also proposed is Univerbation of ⁧ܡܘܿ⁩ (mō) +‎ ⁧ܐܵܕܝܼ⁩ (ādī), literally “What is this?”.[1]
