Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac, a contraction of ܠ- (lə-, “to”) + the construct state of ܐܦܘܬܐ (ʾappūṯā, “forehead”). Therefore literally, “to the forehead of”; compare also in Hebrew לְפִי (lefí, literally “to the mouth of”).
