From the older form ⁧ܛܵܐܸܡ⁩ (ṭāˀim), from Aramaic ⁧טם⁩ (ṭamm), with the /ṭ/, shifting to /č̣/ as observed in many words. Compare Classical Syriac ⁧ܛܡ⁩ (“to stop a cavity by filling”), Turoyo ⁧ܛܳܝܶܡ⁩ (ṭoyem, “to close”), and the variant form ⁧ܐܵܟ̰ܹܡ⁩ (āčēm) which experienced the same shift.
