From the root ⁧ض ي ق⁩ (ḍ-y-q), from Proto-Semitic *ṣ́yḳ- (“to be narrow”). Cognate with Biblical Hebrew ⁧צוּק⁩ (ṣûq, “to constrain, bring into straits, press upon”) and Akkadian 𒊓𒀀𒄣 (sâqu).
