Etymology

Synchronically connected to the root ⁧ب ص ص⁩ (b-ṣ-ṣ) or ⁧ب و ص⁩ (b-w-ṣ) meaning “to urge on”, “to hasten”, “to proceed”, “to outrun”, “a horse leading a race”; the reed being used as a crop to encourage speed.
Diachronically, from Proto-Semitic *būṣ-. Doublet of ⁧بُوصِير⁩ (būṣīr), ⁧بَزّ⁩ (bazz), ⁧بِزَّة⁩ (bizza), and ⁧بُزْيُون⁩ (buzyūn).
