Uncertain, but usually regarded as a non-Semitic Afroasiatic loanword, see Akkadian 𒄠𒋛 (pīru).

Other Semitic cognates include Aramaic פִּילָא‎ (pīlā) and Arabic فِيل‎ (fīl). Compare also Old Armenian փիղ (pʿił), Persian پیل‎ (pil), Sanskrit पीलु (pīlu).
