Formed in Mishnaic times from ⁧סְפוֹג⁩ (s'fóg, “sponge”), from Ancient Greek σπόγγος (spóngos) or σφόγγος (sphóngos).

Verb

⁧סָפַג⁩ • (safág) third-singular masculine past (pa'al construction, passive counterpart ⁧נִסְפַּג⁩)

  1. to absorb ("to suck up or drink in").
  2. to absorb ("to include so that it no longer has separate existence").
  3. to receive something negative.
    ⁧הסרט ספג הרבה ביקורות רעות.⁩ ― The film received a lot of bad reviews. ― haséret safág harbé bikórót raút.
  4. (sports) to have a goal capture by the opposing team (in sports such as football or hockey.)
