The original spelling is յաւն (yawn), of uncertain origin.

Martirosyan proposes derivation from յ- (y-, “in, on, at”) +‎ *աւ-ն- (*aw-n-), from Proto-Indo-European *h₃kʷ-n-, from *h₃ekʷ- (“eye”). For the *-n- he compares Sanskrit अक्षि (ákṣi), genitive singular अक्ष्णाः (akṣ-ṇ-áḥ).

1. (usually in the plural) eyebrows

   յօնք սեաւ ― yōnkʻ seaw ― dark eyebrows

   յօնք կամարաձեւ ― yōnkʻ kamarajew ― finely arched eyebrows

   յօնք թաւ ― yōnkʻ tʻaw ― bushy eyebrows

   յօնք անօսր ― yōnkʻ anōsr ― thin eyebrows

   յօնք նրբին ― yōnkʻ nrbin ― small eyebrows

   յօնք ի վայր անկեալ ― yōnkʻ i vayr ankeal ― hanging eyebrows

   յօնք ամբարհաւաճ ― yōnkʻ ambarhawač ― haughty eyebrows

   յօնք սպառնալից ― yōnkʻ spaṙnalicʻ ― threatening eyebrows

   ամբառնալ զյօնս, զյօնս վեր ի վայր տանել ― ambaṙnal zyōns, zyōns ver i vayr tanel ― to raise the brows through superciliousness, to put on an arch look, to look arch

   պռստել, ի վեր պրկել զյօնս ― pṙstel, i ver prkel zyōns ― to frown, to knit the brow, to look sour or angry

   զյօնսն հանել ― zyōnsn hanel ― to paint the eyebrows

   յօնօք ակնարկել ― yōnōkʻ aknarkel ― to wink, to wink at

2. (figuratively) lofty countenance, stately look, superciliousness, haughtiness

   վանել զյօնն ― vanel zyōnn ― to put off pomp or pride
