The origin is uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *p(e)h₂s(-sk)-, from *peh₂s- (“to feed, graze”), from *peh₂- and cognate with Latin pānis (“bread”), pastillum (“form of sacrificial cake”), pascō (“to feed, pasture; to provide food for; to nurture; to gratify hunger”).
