According to Ačaṙyan, perhaps a “Caucasian” borrowing (Georgian-Zan? Northeast Caucasian?); compare Georgian ხაზი (xazi, “line, row”), Laz ხაზ (xaz, “to draw a line”), Bats ხაზ (xaz), Udi խազ (xaz, “line”).

Alternatively, according to Martirosyan, perhaps an Iranian borrowing, ultimately going back to Proto-Iranian *xad-s-, sigmatic aorist of *xad- (“to beat, inflict a wound”); compare Manichaean Parthian xʾz- (*xāz-, “to devour”), Sanskrit खिदति (khinati, “to tear; to press down”).
