Etymology

Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰoros, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰer- (“catch, enclose”), with some original meaning of "encircling/ring (dance)", whence χόρτος (khórtos, “enclosure”) and Latin cohors, with comparable meanings (multitude, troop).
