Ancient Greek

Perhaps a loanword from Thracian considering the origin of this type of shield. Usually connected with Latin pellis (“skin”) and Ancient Greek πέλμα (pélma, “sole of the foot”), so from Proto-Indo-European *pel- (“to cover”).
