Etymology

The similarity with Latin lapis (“stone”) is hardly accidental; a Mediterranean substrate borrowing is most probable, perhaps through Pre-Greek. Otherwise, from Proto-Indo-European *lep- (“to peel”) (compare secō – saxum; rumpō – rupēs).
