From Ottoman Turkish چالنمق (çalınmaḳ, “to be struck, (of an instrument) to be played, to be stolen”),[1] from Ottoman Turkish چالمق (çalmaḳ, “to strike, to perform music on, to steal”), from Proto-Turkic *čal- (“to hit, to make a sound, to smear”),[2] morphologically çal- +‎ -ın +‎ -tı.
