Obrona hetmańsko-indyjska – otwarcie szachowe z grupy debiutów zamkniętych, rozpoczynające się następującymi posunięciami:
- d4 Sf6
- c4 e6
- Sf3 b6
Najbardziej popularne odpowiedzi dla białych: 4. a3, 4. g3, 4. Sc3, 4. Gf4 i 4. e3.
Charakterystyczną cechą debiutu jest walka o kontrolę nad centralnymi polami e4 i d5. W tym właśnie celu, czarne w klasycznych systemach ustawiają swojego gońca na polu b7. Nowocześniejsze warianty umożliwiają również jego rozwój poprzez pole a6.
W szachowej encyklopedii debiutów obrona hetmańsko-indyjska oznaczona jest kodami od E12 do E19.
